U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement

During the signing ceremony held on January 14, Yerevan and Washington also announced their intention to begin negotiations on a cooperation agreement in the field of atomic energy.

"We are establishing the U.S.-Armenia Strategic Partnership Commission. This lays the foundation for expanding our bilateral cooperation across key areas, including the economy, security and defense, democracy, and justice," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said following the signing ceremony.

According to the Secretary of State, the signing of the agreement elevates cooperation between Armenia and the United States to a more ambitious level. He added that the White House remains committed to strengthening Armenia's sovereignty.

In turn, Ararat Mirzoyan noted that Yerevan and Washington have reached a level of partnership that is of decisive importance amidst the complexities of international relations. He announced that Armenia intends to begin negotiations on a cooperation agreement with the U.S. in the field of atomic energy and to join the Global Coalition against ISIS.

In 2024, amidst deteriorating relations with Russia, Yerevan "suspended" its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and later announced plans to leave the organization soon. On January 9, the Armenian government approved a draft law to initiate the country's accession process to the European Union.

Earlier, on January 7, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in an interview with local television channels, discussed the possibility of establishing strategic cooperation with the United States. Aliyev noted that under the Biden administration, the U.S. has taken an unjust stance toward Azerbaijan.

"The main mistake of the Biden administration regarding Azerbaijan was turning U.S.-Azerbaijan relations into a sacrifice for U.S.-Armenia relations. When they needed us, the Section 907 sanctions were lifted; when they didn’t, they reinstated them. President Trump, on the other hand, sent very clear and straightforward messages. Perhaps it’s not possible to analyze all of this now, but I can say that the majority of them resonate with the Azerbaijani public. That’s why there is significant hope, including the advancement of U.S.-Azerbaijan strategic relations. I believe that if both sides are interested, we can elevate U.S.-Azerbaijan relations to a strategic level," President Ilham Aliyev stated.
